BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Freshmen Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) and Nico Medina (Davie, Fla./American Heritage HS) of men’s and women’s swimming were named Birmingham-Southern/Piggly Wiggly student-athlete of the week for performance February 6-12.
Erwin was named Southern Athletic Association Newcomer of the Year after a dominating performance in her first conference championship meet. She helped the Panthers reclaim the 2017 team title by finishing with 162 individual points. Erwin hit NCAA invite cut times in the 100 breaststroke and 100 freestyle. She took home three SAA championship titles and set two SAA records in the process. She was also a part of three silver medal relay teams.
Medina earned the SAA Newcomer of the Year award after helping the men’s team win its third consecutive team title. He won the 200 and 500 freestyle championships and was a part of the championship 800 freestyle relay team. Medina earned 125 points throughout the championships.
