BSC/Piggly Wiggly Student-Athletes of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern senior Abby Spencer (Auburn, Ala./Auburn HS) of softball and junior Becca Erwin (Duluth, Ga./Duluth HS) of women’s swimming and diving were named the BSC/Piggly Wiggly Student-Athletes of the Week for their performance in competition March 18-24.


Spencer helped lead the Panthers to a 2-0 week.  She went 6-for-8 with two runs scored to hit .750 for the week.  Spencer was also 2-for-3 in stolen bases.  The senior ranks nationally in seven different categories and is second in the league in on-base percentage.


Erwin competed at the 2019 NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships over last week. Erwin competed in three individual events – the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle, and the 100-yard freestyle – placing in the top three in each event. She came in third place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle with times of 1:48.85 and 50.50, respectively. Erwin’s best finish was in the 500-yard freestyle where she came in second with a time of 4:48.25. She was named an All-American in all three races with her performances.


Erwin also competed in three relay events where, with her Panther teammates, she garnered Honorable Mention All-America status with an 11th place finish in the women’s 800-yard freestyle relay.
