Thornton named Big South Freshman of the Week

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – After scoring a career-high 17 points against High Point, Monday, Jan. 16, Birmingham-Southern women's basketball freshman Ashley Thornton was named Big South Conference New Balance Freshman of the Week, announced today by the league office.
Thornton, a forward/guard from Pinson, Ala., posted two break-out games on the week, doubling her season scoring average with her 12.0 points per game. Against High Point on Jan. 16, she poured in 17 points on 6-of-9 from the floor (67 percent) and 5-of-8 from the line (62 percent). Thornton also came up with four rebounds, while handing out one assist and picking up one steal in the match-up.
Five days later against Charleston Southern, Thornton tossed up seven points on 3-of-3 from the field and 1-of-1 from the free throw line, while notching one rebound and one assist. For the week, she shot 75 percent from the floor and 67 percent from the line while posting five rebounds, two assists and one steal.
The Panthers are on the road tonight for their fourth Big South game of the season, taking on Coastal Carolina at 7 p.m. EST in Kimbel Arena.
