BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (33-20, 18-6 BSC) erased a three-run deficit with an eight-run fifth en route to a 14-4 win over Radford University (7-41, 4-20 BSC) and the 2006 Big South Conference Regular Season Championship at Striplin Field on Sunday.
The Panthers claimed their second Big South Conference Regular Season Championship in three years and will be the number one seed in next week's BoJangles Big South Conference Baseball Championship in Conway, S.C. BSC will play No. 6 UNC Asheville on Wednesday at time to be announced.
Radford held a 4-1 going into the bottom of the fifth. Blake Burton hit a solo-home run to start the inning and Allen Aubin followed with a two-run blast to tie the game at four apiece. Brandon Hynick broke the 4-4 tie with a grand slam and Billy Froehlich tripled and scored on a Blake Burton RBI single up the middle for a 9-4 BSC lead.
The Panthers added four runs in the sixth and one in the seventh. Brint Hardy delivered an RBI single followed by an RBI double by Scott Billak and a two-run triple by Froehlich in the sixth. Matt Barber had an inside the park home run in the seventh.
Paul Jones, 2-1 worked two innings to earn the win. Jones gave up two runs on one hit with a strikeout on the day. Mark Doll worked two scoreless innings with two strikeouts and Ronny Woods had a scoreless eighth. Andrew Kerth and Mark Driskill combined for a scoreless ninth to seal the game for BSC.
Josh Deaver, 1-4, took the loss for Radford, allowing 12 runs on 11 hits with a strikeout in 5.2 innings pitched.
Five seniors played their final home game in a BSC uniform on Sunday. The Class of 2006 won their second Big South Conference Regular Season Championship and finished with a four year record of 151-75 and a 57-15 conference record. Matt Barber (SS, Daphne, Ala.,), Scott Billak (OF, North Royalton, Ohio), Blake Burton (C, Atlanta, Ga.), David Horne (RHP, Alpharetta, Ga.) and Ronny Woods (P/2B, Ariton, Ala.) make up this year's senior class.
