BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Birmingham-Southern football team lost to Centre College, 14-13, Saturday at Panther Stadium. Centre remains undefeated at 5-0 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 2-3.

Centre scored the first touchdown of the game at the 8:15 mark of the first quarter on a three-yard run by Jonathan Pinque. John Starks’ kick was good to put the Colonels up 7-0.

The Panthers responded at the 2:25 mark of the first quarter when junior wide receiver David Langston made a five-yard run, and senior Raymond Josof made the extra point, to tie things up, 7-7.

Pinque scored again for the Colonels at the 8:55 mark of the second quarter on an 18-yard run. Starks made the extra point to give Centre a 14-7 lead heading into halftime.

At the 13:57 mark of the third quarter, BSC scored again when senior linebacker Victor Allen intercepted a pass by Grant Conliffe at the 36-yard line and ran it back for a touchdown. Josof missed the extra point, however, and Centre maintained the 14-13 lead. Neither team was able to score again and the Colonels remained undefeated with the one-point win.

Centre dominated the ball in nearly every statistical category, recording 21 first downs to BSC’s eight, 165 yards rushing to BSC’s 56, 187 yards passing to BSC’s 118, and a 41:29 time of possession to BSC’s 18:31. Total offensive yards were 352 to 174 in favor of the Colonels.

Conliffe was 20-of-28 with one interception and 187 yards for Centre. Pinque led with 139 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 28 carries. Nick Edwards and Rob Pope led with 49 and 47 yards receiving, respectively, on five catches apiece. Pinque also led with 174 all-purpose yards. Cooper McGuire and Tim Dougherty led the Centre defense with seven tackles apiece, and McGuire led with three tackles-for-loss and a sack.

For BSC, junior quarterback Joe Thigpen was 7-of-19 with two interceptions and 118 yards. Junior tailback Walter Arrington and Thigpen led with 24 yards rushing each, and Langston led with 40 yards receiving on three catches. Senior wide receiver Tay Walker led with 84 all-purpose yards. On defense, sophomores Andrew Shannon and Kyle Sebestyen led with seven tackles each.

The Panthers are on the road for their next two games, beginning with a trip to Sherman, Texas, next Saturday, Oct. 17, to take on Austin College at 1 p.m.
