BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Birmingham-Southern Panthers defeated the Southwestern Pirates 2-1 Sunday afternoon at BSC Soccer Park.  With the win, the Panthers improve to 9-2-1 on the season while the Pirates fell to 5-6-0.

The Pirates controlled the first half, getting the first goal in the 28th-minute, unassisted, from Alex Keller.  The Panthers were unable to get anything past Southwestern's keeper, who racked up 10 saves in the period.

BSC got on the board in the second half, despite being outshot 14-5 in the frame.  Sean Head connected with Andrew Shelton for the tying goal in the 64th-minute.  Head gave the Panthers their first lead of the game in the 81st-minute when a ball from Tony Crocker came off the Pirate keeper and right back to the 'Southern striker's foot for the go-ahead goal.

The Pirates out-shot BSC 24-19 on the day, but Clint Lum held strong, allowing just the one goal and collecting 10 saves on the day.  Southwestern's keeper stopped 12 for the match, allowing the two Panther goals that gave the win to 'Southern.

The Panthers will return to the pitch this Thursday, October 15, for a non-conference match with Maryville College.  Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at BSC Soccer Park.
