BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Birmingham-Southern football team concludes its 2009 season this weekend on the road, traveling to Jackson, Miss., to face Millsaps College, Saturday, Nov. 14, at 1 p.m.

The Panthers and the Majors have a long history, as the teams played annually prior to BSC dropping its football program after the 1939 season. Prior to that, BSC was 14-1-3 against Millsaps. Since re-starting football in 2007, however, the Panthers are 0-2 against the Majors.

BSC enters the game with a 4-5 record after losing at home last weekend to Huntingdon College. Junior quarterback Joe Thigpen is 79-of-163 with 1,108 passing yards and five touchdown passes, as well as 416 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 154 carries. Junior tailback Walter Arrington leads with 546 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 103 carries, followed by freshman halfback Shawn Morris with 536 yards and eight touchdowns on 73 carries. Junior wide receiver David Langston, who is out with an injury, leads with 241 yards and a touchdown on 15 catches. Sophomore Andrew Shannon leads on defense with 49 total tackles (24 solo, 25 assisted), while junior Jeremy Jones and sophomore Sam Bratt lead with three sacks and freshman Chris Reeves leads with two interceptions.

The Majors are 6-3 on the season heading into Saturday’s game, and tied for first place in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference standings. Millsaps has won its last three contests, defeating Rhodes, No. 25 Centre, and Sewanee. Quarterback Chris Graves is 165-of-293 with 2,230 passing yards and 28 touchdown passes. Shane Bowser leads with 569 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 98 carries, while Michael Galatas leads with 528 receiving yards and nine touchdowns on 28 catches. Will Hawkins leads the Majors’ defense with 85 tackles (40 solo, 45 assisted), while David Dale leads with nine sacks and Kevin Peters leads with six interceptions.
