KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Birmingham-Southern women’s soccer senior captain Lydia Rice has received two more post-season awards from the National Soccer Coaches of America Association (NSCAA) She has been named to the NSCAA Second Team Scholar All-South Region in the College Division and also Third Team Scholar All-American in the College Division.

The NSCAA divides their membership into two divisions, the University and College Divisions. The University Division is comprised solely of NCAA Division I programs while the College Division includes NCAA Divisions II and III and all NAIA and Junior College athletes.

To be nominated for consideration, student-athletes must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) throughout their career; start more than 50 percent of all games and be a significant contributor to the team; be nominated by an institution that is a current NSCAA College Services member; be a junior or above in academic standing at the current institution and either be in their second year at the current school if a transfer student.

Lydia, a Spanish major from Tupelo, Miss. finished the year with an impressive 3.98 grade point average.

The last women’s soccer player at BSC to receive this kind of honor was Caitlin Gordon in 2007. Caitlin was named Third Team Scholar All-South Region and Third Team Scholar All-American.

“This is a great day for Lydia and our soccer program here at Birmingham-Southern”, said Coach Walton. “To me this is a tremendous honor because it not only recognizes the amazing athletic accomplishments that Lydia has achieved, but also highlights what a tremendous student she is as well. For four years Lydia dedicated herself to being the best she could be, both on and off the field, and was unable to receive the recognition she deserves due to our transition to Division III, not that she would ever ask for it. I am thrilled that she is finally getting the recognition that she has truly earned.”
