ETOWAH, N.C. -   The weather was overcast and scattered showers damped the course at the Etowah Valley Country Club as 86 golfers representing 15 colleges and universities teed off for the first round of the Independent Collegiate Invitational. Rylan Lanham led the entire field on day one, shooting a first round 69, 3-under.

Grant Carnie and Bret McGaughey each shot a 70 to tie for second after day one, leading the host Brevard College Tornados to a 291, three strokes ahead of Barton College for the overall first round team lead.

BSC's Matthew Barnes and Jonathan Burke (Barton) also were under par after the first round, with both carding a 71, 1-under.  The two tied for fourth in the individual standings.

Carson-Newman College, led by Brad Robinson's first round 73, sits in third at 298. Wingate, 301, and the University of Montevallo, 302, complete the top five teams after day one.

Birmingham-Southern finished round one in sixth place overall, shooting a combined 304, 16-over.  Ryan Falgout joined Matt Barnes in the top ten, finishing with a 74, 2-over.

The second round of the ICI was canceled due to storms ending, prematurely, the Panther's 2008-09 schedule.
