Softball sweeps Hendrix for best record in program history

The No. 17 Birmingham-Southern softball team completed a three-game sweep of Hendrix College today, winning 10-2 and 11-0, to achieve the best record and highest winning percentage in program history, ending the season at 32-5.


In the first game today, the Panthers scored one run in the top of the first inning, three in the top of the second, three in the top of the fourth, and three in the top of the seventh. Hendrix scored its two runs in the bottom of the fourth and the sixth.

Senior Melissa Muehlenfeld started in the circle and threw four innings, giving up six hits and one earned run with two strikeouts. She moves to 14-2 on the season. Junior Tori Harris came in for the final three innings and allowed a hit and an earned run with one strikeout.

Freshman Ronni Ferris was 4-5 at the plate with four RBI, while Muehlenfeld was 3-4 with three RBI. Harris was 2-4, and senior Kayla Backlund was 2-5, while freshman Ashley Bice recorded two RBI and sophomore Melissa Revis recorded one.

In game two, BSC scored three runs in the top of the first, one in the top of the third, six in the top of the fourth, and one in the top of the fifth. Harris was 2-3 with four RBI, and freshman Brittany Vintson was 2-3 with two RBI. Senior Erin Glover was 1-3 with two RBI, and Bice and junior Jena Franks were both 2-3 with one RBI. Freshman Emily Merritt was also 1-3 with one RBI.

Ferris was the winning pitcher, throwing five innings and giving up four hits with five strikeouts in the shutout. She moves to 8-1 with the win.

The Panthers end the 2009 season having broken several program records, such as single-season batting average (.364), runs (279), stolen bases (86) and stolen base percentage (.945), triples (17), RBI (236), fewest strikeouts (102), and fielding percentage (.969). The pitching staff broke the single-season shutouts record (16), as well as the single-season records for lowest ERA (1.19) and lowest opponent batting average (.186). The team tied the single-season wins record (32) but now owns the best overall record (32-5) and winning percentage (.865) in program history.

Individual records that fell this season were by Muehlenfeld (single-season stolen bases (38) and stolen base percentage (.974); career stolen bases (81) and stolen base percentage (.890); single-season runs (50) and career runs (128)), Backlund (career (19) and single-season (10) triples), Franks (single-season RBI (46)), and Harris (single-season low ERA (1.03) and opponent batting average (.158)).
