Courtesy of three goals each from Alexis Sweda and Chelsea Van Voorhis, the Birmingham-Southern women's lacrosse team defeated Trine University, 13-9, Friday afternoon at Panther Stadium. BSC moves to 3-3 with the win, while Trine falls to 2-3.


The Panthers jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, with goals from Lyndsay Griffin, assisted by Ashley Johnson, an unassisted goal from Johnson, two goals from Sweda, the latter assisted by Brit La Palm, a goal by Cynthia Andrews, and one from Van Voorhis, all in the first 16 minutes of the half.

Trine got on the board at the 11:22 mark on a goal from Emily Shreeve, and the Panthers took a 7-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.

BSC scored quickly to open the second half with a goal from La Palm, and the teams traded goals after that, with Griffin and Shreeve scoring to bring the score to 9-3. Sweda and Van Voorhis found the net after that, putting BSC up 11-3, but Trine answered with four straight goals (from Laura Bernard, Shreeve, Ashley Kocsis, and Samantha Kumfer) to cut the Panther lead to 11-7.

Johnson scored, assisted by Sweda, to increase the lead to 12-7, but Trine answered again with two goals - both from Kayla Grieser - cutting it to 12-9 with 2:37 left to play. The BSC defense held the Thunder scoreless, and Van Voorhis was able to find the net once again, putting BSC up 13-9 for the win.

Katie Bates played all 60 minutes in goal for BSC, recording six saves. Genice Addis was the starting goalie for Trine, and made three saves in nearly 16 minutes of play. Emily Cordona came in for the final 44 minutes and recorded seven saves.

Griffin led BSC with six shots, and Sweda led with six ground balls. For Trine, Bernard led with six shots and Shreeve led with six ground balls.

The Panthers are back in action tomorrow, facing Tennessee Wesleyan at 1 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
