Panthers open new year with 69-58 win over Oglethorpe

ATLANTA –
With four players scoring in double figures, including a 13-point 14-rebound showing from sophomore Ashton Spurgin, the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team opened 2010 with a 69-58 win against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Oglethorpe University, Friday evening in Atlanta. The Panthers move to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Stormy Petrels fall to 6-5 overall and 1-1 in the SCAC.

BSC scored the first basket of the game, a jumper from sophomore Sam Davidson, and would never trail. Although Oglethorpe tied things up twice in the first half, the Panthers maintained the lead and took a 32-24 advantage into the halftime break.

OU was only able to cut the BSC lead to eight in the second half, while the Panthers led by as much as 17, twice, before eventually winning by 11.

Junior Katelyn Wilson led with 16 points, followed by freshman Alex Adams with 15 points, Davidson with 14 points, and Spurgin with 13 points. Spurgin was also impressive with a career-high 14 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Davidson and Wilson also led with three assists each, and sophomore Erin Jackson recorded three blocks.

BSC shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the field, 31.8 percent (7-of-22) from three-point range, and 66.7 percent (12-of-18) from the free throw line.

The Panthers stay on the road this Sunday, Jan. 3, traveling to face Sewanee at 1 p.m.
