Panthers fall to Hendrix College at home, 70-65

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – At home for the first time in over a month, the Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team lost at home to Hendrix College, 70-65, Friday evening in Bill Battle Coliseum. The Warriors move to 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the SCAC, while the Panthers fall to 7-9 overall and 2-6 in the conference with their sixth straight loss.
Hendrix jumped out to a 7-0 lead to start the game, and BSC did not score its first basket – a three-pointer from junior Katelyn Wilson – until the 15:46 mark. The Warriors maintained the lead, going up by double digits, 21-10, at the 8:52 mark, and leading by as much as 14, twice, before taking a 33-27 lead into the halftime break.
BSC came out in the second half and immediately picked up a steal and hit a three-pointer – this time by sophomore Sam Davidson – to cut the lead to three, and cut it to two, 36-34, at the 18:24 mark on a layup by freshman Alex Adams. But the Warriors were able to stay ahead, and built their lead back up to double digits, 42-53, by the 10-minute mark of the half. The Panthers chipped away at the advantage and used a 10-2 run cut it back down to three, 57-54, at the 6:43 mark, before finally tying it up, 57-57, on another trey by Davidson. BSC was able to tie it up again, 61-61, with 4:02 left to play, but Hendrix was able to stay one step ahead of the Panthers for the remainder of the game, eventually winning by five, 70-65.
Christina Byler led the Warriors with 20 points and five steals, while Chelsey White led with 11 rebounds and Amanda Morris led with five assists.
The Warriors shot 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the field, 32 percent (8-of-25) from three-point range, and 82.8 percent (24-of-29) from the free throw line.
For the Panthers, Wilson led with 13 points and four assists, followed by Adams with 12 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Freshman Caroline King led with four steals, and sophomore Erin Jackson had two blocks.
BSC shot 43.4 percent (23-of-53) overall, 35 percent (7-of-20) from three, and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the line.
The Warriors out-rebounded the Panthers, 40-31, and committed 20 turnovers to BSC’s 24.
The Panthers are at home again this Sunday, Jan. 24, taking on Millsaps College at 1 p.m. in Bill Battle Coliseum.
