BSC picks up big home win over Millsaps, 87-40

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
The Birmingham-Southern women’s basketball team ended a six-game losing streak and broke the single-game rebounding record with 64 boards in a home win against Millsaps College, Sunday, 87-40. The Panthers move to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in the SCAC, while the Majors remain winless at 0-18 and 0-9.

Millsaps scored the first basket of the game, but the Panthers tied it up and then pulled ahead on a three-pointer from freshman Caroline King at the 17:09 mark. BSC quickly went up by nine, 11-2, but Millsaps was able to cut the lead to two, twice, around the 12-minute mark before the Panthers went on a 17-2 run to go up 30-13 with 5:19 left in the half. BSC kept shooting and led by as much as 24 before leading 40-18 at the half.

The Panthers continued to increase their lead throughout the second half, going up by 31, 53-22, at the 16-minute mark, and then 41, 63-22, at the 11:28 mark. BSC led by as much as 49 three times before winning by 47, 87-40.

King led the Panthers with 11 points, followed by sophomore Sam Davidson with 10 points and four assists. Freshman Alex Adams led on the boards with nine, and sophomore Erin Jackson recorded two blocks.

For Millsaps, who has been plagued this season by injury and sickness, Jasmine Harbor led with 11 points, and Sarah Spann and Lovie Love each had 10 points. Spann also led with four assists, and Love had five steals.

BSC had its best shooting game of the season, going 35-of-68 (51.5 percent) from the field, 13-of-28 (46.4 percent) from three-point range, and 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) from the free throw line. Millsaps struggled offensively, shooting 14-of-60 (23.3 percent) overall, 1-of-9 (11.1 percent) from long-range, and 11-of-17 (64.7 percent) at the stripe.

The Panthers broke the single-game rebounding record with 64 caroms, while Millsaps pulled down 21 boards. BSC also committed 21 turnovers to the Majors’ eight.

BSC is on the road for its next two games, traveling to face Trinity University, Friday, Jan. 29, in San Antonio, and Southwestern University, Saturday, Jan. 30, in Georgetown, Texas.
