Panthers fall to Denison, 19-5

FOREST GROVE, Ore. –
The Birmingham-Southern women’s lacrosse team wrapped up its Spring Break trip to the west coast today with a 19-5 loss to Denison University in Forest Grove, Ore.

BSC now stands at 5-2 on the season, while Denison moves to 3-1.

Denison jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the first nine minutes of play before BSC finally got on the board at the 21:28 mark on a free position shot goal by sophomore Chelsea Van Voorhis. The teams traded goals twice after that before BSC was able to score two straight to cut it to 6-4 at the 12:53 mark on a goal by sophomore Lyndsay Griffin (assisted by freshman Anna Barry). They traded once more to bring it to 7-5 with 11:07 remaining in the half before Denison scored four straight to end the period with an 11-5 lead.

The Panthers were unable to find the net in the second half, but the Big Red scored eight more goals for the 19-5 win.

Griffin led BSC with two of its five goals and four of its 11 shots. Denison out-shot the Panthers 34-11, and led 18-11 on ground balls and 17-9 on draw controls. BSC also committed 19 turnovers to Denison’s 11.

Sophomore goalkeeper Katie Bates played all 60 minutes in the net for BSC and made nine saves.

BSC has a week off before returning to action at home on Wednesday, March 24, against North Central University at 7 p.m. at Panther Stadium.
