Diamond Panthers sweep doubleheader from Rust College

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern swept a doubleheader from Rust College, winning game on 15-2 before holding on for a 5-2 win in the night cap here Wednesday at Striplin Field.

The Panthers snapped a four-game losing streak to improve to 12-12 on the season. BSC travels to Transylvania University for a three-game series, starting on Friday at 3 p.m. in Lexington, Ky.

BSC scored 15 runs on 13 hits and took advantage of three Rust errors in game one. The Panthers scored in every inning starting with two in the first, four in the second, three in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Drew Leachman went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles, three RBI and two runs scored to lead BSC at the plate. Josh Whitaker went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI.  Patrick Kimmons was 2-for-2 with an RBI while Sam Hill had two RBI. Bryan Higginbotham belted solo home run in the fourth and Reed Tuttle, Ben Lilly, Kyle Mayes, Tripp Haas and Ben Lilly each had an RBI.

Drew Crofton, 2-1, tossed a planned two innings to get the win. Crofton allowed no runs on one hit with a strikeout. Marcus Brown tossed five innings allowing 12 runs on 10 hits with three strikes in the loss.

The Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two, plating a run in the first and four in the second.  Whitaker reached on an error and scored on a Hill ground out in the first. Tuttle had a two-RBI single and Higginbotham drove in a run with a single to highlight the four-run second.

Rust scored a run in the third and fifth innings to cut the lead to 5-2. Rashad Thompson got on base on a catcher’s interference and scored on a Tim Williams double in the third. Antoin Conley walked and scored on an error in the fifth.

Clay Jones, 2-0, pitched two innings, allowing no runs or hits with three strikeouts to earn the win. Ben Lilly tossed the seventh inning to record his first save.
