BSC Baseball drops doubleheader to Transylvania University

LEXINGTON, Ky. –  Transylvania University (13-4) claimed a 4-3 win over Birmingham-Southern (12-14)  the night cap of a doubleheader after winning game one 12-7 at Marquard Field on Saturday.

Transylvania took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before BSC tied the game in the sixth. J.D. Hulse led off with a single and scored on a Sam Hill single. The tie was broken in the bottom of the sixth when Transylvania plated three runs to take 4-1 lead.  

BSC cut the deficit to 4-3 in the seventh. Reed Tuttle walked to start the inning and came home on a Darby Weppner RBI single. Weppner later scored on a Josh Whitaker single.

The Panthers loaded the bases in the ninth. Anthony Bianchi and Whitaker drew two-out walks and Hulse was hit by a pitch forcing pitching change. Brent Roach came on and got a fly out to end the game and earn the save.

Adam Wilkins (5-0) picked up the win in game two, tossing seven innings while allowing three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Clay Malcolm (3-4) struck out five while allowing two runs on six hits to take the loss.

BSC got out of the gates quickly in game one, scoring six runs in the first to take a 6-0 lead. Bryan Higginbotham and Whitaker had two-RBI singles and Hill doubled in a run to highlight the inning.

The Pioneers tallied six runs, one earned, in the second to tie the game and then added three runs in the fourth and sixth innings to build a 12-6 lead.  Hill cut the TU lead to 12-7 with a solo home run in the seventh.

Ben Luking (4-1) was credited with the win, allowing seven runs on 10 hits in seven innings of work for TU. Richard Vance (1-2) suffered the loss for BSC, giving up nine runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

The Panthers travel to Memphis, Tenn., for a four-game SCAC series against Rhodes College on Friday at 3 p.m.
