MARYVILLE, Tenn. – Birmingham-Southern (3-3) held off a ninth inning rally to claim a 9-8 win in game one of a doubleheader before dropping a 4-2 decision to Maryville College (1-4) in the night cap here Saturday.
BSC scored four runs in the first inning and added one in the sixth and four in the seventh to take a 9-4 lead in game one. Maryville plated four runs in the ninth before Patrick Martin entered the game following a two-run home run to record the final out and record his second save of the season.
Reed Tuttle went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead BSC in game one. Sam Hill had two hits and drove in two runs while Patrick Kimmons also had two RBI.
Richard Vance started and worked 5 2/3 innings to get the win and improve to 1-0. Vance had three strikeouts and allowed three runs on five hits. Zach Smigiel gave up four runs on four hits with two strikeouts to take the loss and fall to 0-1 for Maryville.
Maryville scored a run in the first, third and fifth innings to build a 3-0 lead in game two.
BSC rallied for two runs in the sixth. Sam Hill, who went 2-for-2, had an RBI single and Bryan Higginbotham double home a run to cut the MC lead to 3-2. MC would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to equal the final margin.
Maryville’s Matt Johnson (0-1) recorded six strikeouts in a complete game victory while allowing two runs on five hits with four walks. Clay Malcolm (0-1) gave up three runs on seven hits with three strikeouts to take the loss for BSC. Alex Goodsell pitched two innings with two strikeouts.
BSC returns to action hosting a two-game series against Sewanee, beginning on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Striplin Field.
