BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (17-20) plated a run in the fifth to break a 2-2 tie en route to a 6-2 win over Maryville College (12-25) at Striplin Field on Saturday.
Reed Tuttle delivered a single to score Bryan Higginbotham, who started the inning with a single, to break the tie.
BSC would go on to score three runs in the seventh to stretch the lead to 6-2. Brandon Ricco had an RBI single and later scored on a wild pitch. Drew Leachman scored when Higginbotham reached on a fielder’s choice.
The Panthers took a 2-0 lead in the first. Ricco singled and scored on Higginbotham’s two-run home run to left.
Maryville cut the lead in half in the third and tied the game at two apiece in the sixth. Zac Hargett had an RBI double in the third and Morgan Costner doubled and scored on a Justin Ghorley sacrifice fly.
Clay Malcolm worked 6 1/3 innings with five strikeouts to earn the win for BSC. Malcolm gave up two runs on five hits on the day and improved to 5-4. Clay Jones tossed the final 2 2/3 innings to record the save.
Zach Smigel, 2-7, suffered the loss for Maryville, allowing six runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.
Birmingham-Southern returns to action with a doubleheader against Spalding University at 12 p.m.
