ATLANTA, Ga. – After dropping the first two games of the series, Birmingham-Southern swept a doubleheader from Oglethorpe University by the scores of 7-1 and 15-3 on Sunday. The two wins helped BSC split the four-game series, moving it’s record to 16-19 on the season while Oglethorpe University is now 8-20 on the season.
Oglethorpe took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of game one before BSC plated one in the fourth, five in the sixth and one in the seventh for the 7-1 win.
Drew Leachman, who was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, singled and scored when Bryan Higginbotham was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fourth. Brandon Ricco had a two-run single and Darby Weppner drove in a run with a single in the five-run sixth. Ricco delivered an RBI single in the seventh to plate BSC’s final run.
Clay Malcolm, 4-4, tossed a complete game, recording three strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits as the pitcher of record for BSC. Brad Brickhouse was touched up for six runs on six hits with a strikeout in 5 1/3 innings to suffer the loss for the Petrels.
The Petrels scored a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead in game two before BSC plated 11 runs in the fourth inning to take an 11-1 lead. Patrick Kimmons had a two-run single and an RBI double while J.D. Hulse and Clay Jones had two RBI singles in the fourth. Reed Tuttle and Josh Whitaker had RBI singles and Sam Hill plated a run with a sac-fly.
Birmingham-Southern pushed four runs across in the eighth for a 15-3 lead that would end the game due to the NCAA 10-run rule. Kyle Mayes drove in a run with a single followed by a Jones two run double and a Tripp Haas RBI double.
Drew Crofton, 3-1, had two strikeouts and allowed three runs on 10 hits in six innings as the winning pitcher. Sam Briend took the loss for Oglethorpe, allowing nine runs on nine hits.
Birmingham-Southern returns home for a five-game home stand, starting on Thursday against Huntingdon College at 6 p.m.
