Diamond Panthers come from behind to defeat Sewanee

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Birmingham-Southern (14-17) used a four-run sixth inning a two-run deficit en route to an 11-7 come from behind win over the University of the South-Sewanee (4-23) at Montgomery Field on Tuesday.

Trailing 6-4 in the sixth, the Panthers plated four runs to take an 8-6 lead. Reed Tuttle singled to start the inning and came around on a Darby Weppner double. Weppner later scored on a wild pitch. Josh Whitaker walked and scored on Drew Leachman double and J.D. Hulse drew a bases loaded walk to highlight the frame.

BSC added three runs in the eighth to push the lead to 11-6. Whitaker led off the inning with a solo home run. Leachman reached on an error and scored on a Sam Hill single and Brandon Ricco singled and scored when Bryan Higginbotham reached on a fielder’s choice.

The Panthers jumped out to a 4-1 lead, scoring a run in the first and fourth innings and two in the second. Ricco drove in Hulse with a single in the first and Weppner belted a two-run home run in the second. Whitaker singled and later scored on a Ricco sac-fly in the fourth.

Sewanee scored a run in the third and five in the sixth to claim a 6-4 lead and set up the BSC sixth.

Anthony Bianchi, 2-0, pitched two innings in relief of starter Patrick Martin to earn the win for BSC. Trey Axe, 0-1, gave two runs on no hits in 1/3 of an inning to take the loss for Sewanee.

Weppner went 3-for-4 with three RBI and a two-run home run to lead BSC’s 14-hit attack. Hulse, Ricco and Whitaker each had two hits.

The Panthers hit the road for a four-game SCAC-series this weekend at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga.  Game one is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. while Saturday’s doubleheader is set for 12 p.m. Sunday’s game is a 1 p.m. first pitch.
