BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Adrian College (5-0) overcame a 3-0 deficit to earn a 4-3 win in the nightcap while sweeping a doubleheader from Birmingham-Southern (5-5) at Striplin Field on Friday. The Bulldogs captured an 11-5 win in game one.
Adrian scored five runs in the first inning and never looked back in game one. Jack Cappelletty, who was 4-for-6 with five RBI in the doubleheader, Alexander Younce and Andrew Todd singled in runs to highlight the first inning.
BSC would answer in the bottom of the first with two runs. Sam Hill had an RBI single and Bryan Higginbotham plated a run on a sac-fly.
Adrian went on to score one in the second, two in the third, one in seventh and two in the eighth to round out the scoring. BSC’s Ben Lilly had a two-run double to highlight a three-run ninth for BSC.
Alex Webster (1-0) pitched eight innings with a strikeout to get the win for Adrian. Lilly (0-1) took the loss for BSC, lasting 1/3 of inning and giving up five runs on four hits.
In game two, BSC scored three in the sixth to break a scoreless tie and take a 3-0 lead. Higginbotham and Brandon Ricco had RBI singles and another run scored on a passed ball.
The Bulldogs would score three in the sixth and then a run in the bottom of the seventh on a Cappelletty one-out RBI double to win game two.
Adrian Woods (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits. Alex Goodsell (0-1) suffered the loss for BSC, allowing two runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
Birmingham-Southern plays Mount Saint Joseph at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Mount Saint Joseph and Adrian College start the day’s action at 10 a.m.
