BSC out slugs Mount Saint Joseph, 15-9

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (6-5) used a seven-run fifth inning to break open one-run game en route to a 15-9 win over the College of Mount Saint Joseph (1-1) here Saturday at Striplin Field.

Mount Saint Joseph scored a run in the fourth and fifth innings to cut BSC’s lead to 8-7 before BSC plated seven runs on six hits and took advantage of one error in the bottom of the fifth. J.D. Hulse, Sam Hill, Brandon Ricco and Reed Tuttle had RBI singles and Drew Leachman delivered an RBI triple to highlight the inning.

The Lions took an early 4-0 lead in the top of the first before the Panthers scored three in the bottom half to trail 4-3 going to the second. Bryan Higginbotham and  Darby Weppner had a two-RBI single.

BSC added three more runs in the second and two in the third to take an 8-5 advantage. Hulse had an RBI single and Hill got a run home on a fielder’s choice in the second and Leachman double home a run in the third.

Clay Jones picked up the win in relief of starter Clay Malcolm. Jones, 1-0, worked four innings, allowing three runs on two hits with a strikeout. Patrick Kimmons finished the game with a scoreless ninth.

Todd Schwertman, 0-1, was losing pitcher for Mount Saint Joseph. Schwertman gave up eight runs, three earned, on nine hits on the afternoon.

Hulse went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and an RBI while Leachman was also 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead BSC at the plate.  Hill was 2-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI and Ricco was 2-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored. Tuttle went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Mount Saint Joseph defeated Adrian College 7-2 in the morning contest.

Birmingham-Southern and Mount Saint Joseph close out the weekend with a single game on Sunday at 11 a.m.
