Diamond Panthers sweep doubleheader from Centre

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern scored a combined 26 runs on 28 hits to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Centre College by the scores of 12-6 and 14-2 here Sunday at Striplin Field.
The Panthers improved to 9-8 overall and will play the final game of the four-game series against Centre on Monday at 6 p.m. Centre fell 7-4 on the season.
BSC scored three runs in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth to build a 12-3 lead in game one. Centre plated three runs in the seventh to end the game one scoring.
Clay Jones, Rand Hutchison and Josh Whitaker each had two hits to lead BSC in game one. Tuttle drove in three runs and Jones had two RBI while Drew Leachman, Sam Hill, Bryan Higginbotham, Darby Weppner, and Whitaker each had one RBI.
Clay Malcolm (3-2) pitched 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts and gave up three runs on eight hits to earn the win for BSC. Andy Hagerman (1-1) was the losing pitcher for Centre, allowing eight runs on six hits.
The Panthers plated 14 runs on 18 hits and took advantage of four Centre errors to end game two due to the NCAA 10-run rule. BSC scored in every inning, starting with one in the first, two in the second, third and fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth.
J.D. Hulse went 4-for-5 with a three-run home run and four RBI. Leachman went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. Hill was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI and Jones was 3-for-4 with a double, a two-run home run and two runs scored.
Michael McCalib (1-0) allowed two runs and scattered six hits with three strikeouts for his first complete game and win of the season. Aaron Herbert was roughed up for seven runs on 12 hits with two strikeouts in four innings.
