BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – DePauw University (14-3) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth to earn a 7-3 win over Birmingham-Southern (10-11) here Sunday at Striplin Field
Clay Jones led off the ninth with a double and Josh Whitaker reached on a throwing error by the DU third baseman with one out. Kyle Mayes singled up the middle to score Jones and cut the deficit to 7-3. Sam Hill drew a two-out walk to load the bases before Tigers’ reliever Paul Rodenhouse got a pop out to end the game.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead in the first. Hill singled and scored on a Bryan Higginbotham double. Higginbotham was stranded at third when the inning came to a close.
DePauw tied the game with a run in the third and took a 3-1 lead with a two-run fourth. Kyle Thompson singled and scored when Justin Weiner reached on an error in the third. Jeremy Dickinson had a two-RBI single in the fourth.
BSC cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the third. Reed Tuttle singled and later scored on Jones’ RBI single.
DePauw added some cushion to its lead with four runs on five hits in the fifth. Adam Ford and Matt Kleine had an RBI single and Taylor Hoffman doubled home a run to highlight the inning and give the Tigers a 7-2 lead.
Aaron Meyers (3-0) tossed eight innings with six strikeouts while allowing two runs on eight hits as the pitcher of record for DU. Starter Clay Malcolm (3-3) took the loss for BSC, giving up five runs, three earned, on five hits with a pair of strikeouts.
BSC and DePauw wrap up the four-game series on Monday at 2 p.m.
