Diamond Panthers storm past Sewanee, 10-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern (4-3) scored 10 runs on eight hits and took advantage of three The University of South-Sewanee errors on its way to a 10-3 win here Saturday (0-1) at Striplin Field.

Sewanee got on the board first with a run in the top of the first before BSC scored four in the bottom of the inning to take a 4-1 lead. Sam Hill had a two-run double and another run came home on a Reed Tuttle RBI ground out.

The Tigers plated two in the second to cut the Panthers’ lead to 4-3. Mac McCallum belted his first home run of the season to highlight the inning for Sewanee.

That was as close as Sewanee would get as BSC would score three in the sixth and seventh to equal the final margin of victory.

Darby Weppner led off the sixth with a single and later scored on a throwing error and Tuttle walked and came to the plate courtesy of a wild pitch. Patrick Kimmons singled and scored on a Josh Whitaker RBI ground out.

Tuttle would drive in a run in the seventh on a double and Kimmons’ RBI single scored Tuttle. A dropped fly ball in centerfield accounted for BSC’s first run in the seventh.

Drew Crofton tossed five innings in relief of starter Richard Vance. Crofton did not allow a run on four hits and recorded five strikeouts to get the win and improve to 1-1. Alex Goodsell and Drew Morris tossed two scoreless innings to finish the game.

Greg Bartleski, 0-1, started and gave up four runs, three earned, on four hits but recorded seven strikeouts to take the loss for Sewanee.
