BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Centre College (7-2) scored two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to overcome a 6-4 deficit and earn an 8-6 win over Birmingham-Southern College (7-8) on Saturday at Striplin Field.
Trailing 4-1 going in to the fifth inning, BSC exploded for five runs on four hits and two CC errors. Sam Hill had a two RBI single and Darby Weppner had a two-run double to highlight the inning.
Ryan Smith and Steven Kull started the two-run sixth inning with doubles. Smith came in to score on a Jeffrey Williams ground out and Kull scored on a Ben Jeffers single.
The Panthers quickly got two outs in the seventh before Smith and Kull struck out swinging before reaching first base on wild pitches. Both would come around to score on a Jeffers two-run single to give CC an 8-6 lead.
Colonels’ starter John Herbert (2-0) would make the lead hold up, blanking the Panthers over the final four innings to record the complete game. Herbert struck out 14 and allowed six runs, two earned on nine hits.
Alex Goodsell took the loss (2-3) allowing two runs on thee hits with a pair of strikeouts in 1 1/3 innings for BSC.
Hill finished the day 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run score to lead BSC at the plate. Drew Leachman was 2-for-5 with a run scored while Weppner had a hit and two RBI.
The BSC-Centre series continues with a doubleheader on Sunday at 1 p.m.
