BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – DePauw University (13-3) swept a doubleheader from Birmingham-Southern (10-10) winning 8-0 in game one and 11-3 in the night cap at Striplin Field on Saturday.
Ben Gardner hit a solo home run in the top of the first to give DePauw a 1-0 lead in game one. The Tigers would extend the lead in the sixth scoring seven unearned runs on four hits and four BSC errors.
Drew Leachman and Reed Tuttle each went 2-for-3 to lead BSC at the plate. The Panthers left five runners in scoring position through the first five innings.
Jeremy Alland, 2-1, tossed a six-hit complete game shutout with four strikeouts to get the victory for DePauw. Richard Vance suffered the loss to fall to 1-1. Vance gave up eight runs, one earned, on six hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Panthers held a 3-2 lead in game two, scoring a run in the first, second and fourth innings. Leachman walked and scored on a Tuttle RBI single in the first. Patrick Kimmons singled and scored on an error in the second and J.D. Hulse got on a bunt single and later came home on a Sam Hill single in the fourth.
DePauw would nine unanswered to close the game. The Tigers scored four in the sixth, two in the seventh and three in the eighth.
John Tschantz (4-1) pitched seven innings allowing three runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts as the pitcher of record for DePauw. Michael McCalib (1-1) tossed 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts while allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits to take the loss.
BSC and DePauw play game three of the four game series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m.
