Diamond Panthers fall to DePauw University on late home run
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Birmingham-Southern rallied to take a 6-5 lead before DePauw University’s Kyle Thompson belted a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to lead the Tigers to a 7-6 win on Monday.
The Panthers scored three runs in the seventh inning and one in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead. Sam Hill singled and scored on a wild pitch and Darby Weppner hit a two-run home run with Bryan Higginbotham aboard to tie the game, 5-5. Kyle Mayes reached on an error and scored on a Reed Tuttle single in the eighth.
Mike Stout led off the ninth with a single before Justin Weiner struck out and Jon Newman popped out to put DePauw down to its final out. Thompson hit a 3-2 pitch out the park down the left field line to give DePauw 7-6 lead.
Higginbotham delivered a one-out double to start a BSC threat in the bottom of the ninth. Higginbotham advanced to third on a wild pitch before a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second and then saw BSC put up two runs in the third to take a 2-1 lead.. Newman singled and scored on a Thompson double in the second for DU. Higginbotham, who was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored, hit a home run to left center field in the third for BSC.
DePauw scored one in the fourth, two in the sixth and one in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead. Jack Gavin had an RBI single in the fourth. Gavin and Eric Reese singled in runs in the sixth while Matt Kleine scored on a Newman sac-fly in the seventh.
Derek Bryant was credited with the win in relief of starter Brad Gerlach. Bryant, 3-0) tossed 1 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Bran Rodenhouse pitched the ninth with a strikeout to earn his third save. Alex Goodsell, 2-4, took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits with a strikeout in 2 1/3 innings.
BSC hosts a doubleheader against Rust College on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
