BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – A seven-run ninth inning from the Scots vaulted Maryville College (1-0) past the BSC (0-1) Panthers tonight at Striplin Field. The loss went to BSC’s Clay Jones while Maryville’s Riley Finch collected the win.
The game remained scoreless into the bottom of the fourth when Drew Leachman scored on a bases-loaded walk after waking himself. The Panthers had the bases loaded with no outs in the inning and were unable to drive in any other runs in the inning. The Scots got the evener in the top of the seventh thanks to a double from Zac Hargett.
Things were still manageable until the final frame. The Scots scored the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth, but they exploded in the final inning for seven runs which buried the Panthers chances of comeback. Maryville connected with five hits and took advantage of two BSC errors to pin the seven-spot on the Panthers. Blake Walley’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning, scoring Alex Head, would not be enough to close the gap as the Panthers fell 9-2 in the season opener for both teams.
BSC posted two runs on three hits with four errors on the night. Maryville’s line read nine runs on 14 hits and only two errors. The Panthers will have to hope that the Scots used up all their offense tonight when they take on Maryville in the second-and-final game of the series tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Striplin Field.
