BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team picked up two more wins against Spalding University, Saturday, to complete the three-game sweep of the Golden Eagles, winning 14-2 and 13-0, both in seven innings. BSC moves to 5-2 on the season, while SU falls to 1-5.
In the first game today, the Panthers scored in every inning but the sixth. In the first, #Sam Hill# doubled to left-center to bring in two runs, #Darby Weppner# picked up an RBI on a ground-out, and #Josh Whitaker# singled to right field to bring the score to 4-0.
BSC put two more on the board in the second on a double down the right field line by Hill. The Panthers scored five in the third, courtesy of a double to right-center by #Blake Walley#, a single up the middle by #Patrick Kimmons#, a bases-loaded walk, an RBI ground-out from Hill, and a single to right-center by Weppner, bringing the score to 11-0.
In the fourth inning, the Panthers pushed the lead to 13-0 on a two-run single to right-center by #J.D. Hulse#, and then went up 14-0 in the fifth on an RBI ground-out by Kimmons.
Spalding picked up its first hit of the game and got on the board in the top of the sixth when Zev Bernard singled up the middle for two RBI. Neither teams would score again, and the game ended early in the seventh with a final score of 14-2.
#Clay Malcolm# started on the mound for the Panthers and threw three innings, picking up four strikeouts and a walk with no hits to move to 2-0 on the season. #Frank Mullens#, #Brooks Webb#, and #Jordan Burchett# split the remaining innings, and allowed only two Golden Eagle hits.
Hill, #Alex Head#, and Walley led with two of the Panthers' 12 hits apiece, while Hill led with five RBI.
In the nightcap, the score remained 0-0 until the bottom of the third, when BSC scored four runs on a bases-loaded walk, a sacrifice fly-out to center field by Head, and a two-RBI double by Whitaker.
The Panthers scored two more in the fourth when #Clay Jones# scored on a wild pitch and on a sacrifice fly-out to center by #Bryan Higginbotham#.
In the bottom of the sixth, BSC put seven runs on the board, courtesy of an RBI double from Hill, an RBI single from Weppner, a Spalding error that scored two runs when the ball bounced over the fence on a throw home, and a three-RBI double to left-center by #Drew Leachman#. The Golden Eagles were unable to score in the top of the seventh, and the game ended early once again, with a final score of 13-0.
#Drew Crofton# was the Panthers' starting pitcher, going five innings and giving up two hits with four strikeouts to move to 2-0. #Richard Vance# and #Jesse Meier# also came in for an inning apiece and the combined shutout.
Hulse, Leachman and Hill led with two of BSC's 11 hits apiece, and Leachman led with three RBI.
BSC is on the road for its next game, traveling to take on Huntingdon College, Friday, Feb. 27, at 4 p.m. The Panthers then have a big home weekend, playing Wabash College and Huntingdon at home on Saturday, Feb. 28, and Sunday, March 1.
