Panthers win big at Huntingdon, 13-1
MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern (6-2) Panthers racked up another big win in a rain-shortened seven this evening at Huntingdon College, defeating the Hawks 13-1. BSC piled up an eight-run seventh to put the Hawks away. #Clay Malcolm# pitched the full six for the Panthers, collecting his third win of the season.
The Panthers got on the board early, putting two up in the second, and never trailed in the game. #Bryan Higginbotham# led the inning with a walk and stole third before #Jon Walker# drove him in three batters later, giving BSC the 1-0 lead. A single from #JD Hulse# on the next at-bat drove in #Josh Whitaker# scoring what would be the winning run.
2008 SCAC Freshman-of-the-Year #Sam Hill# collected his second homerun of the season in the fourth, scoring two of the Panthers’ three runs in that frame. The Hawks’ only run came in the sixth inning when Bryant Hall bunted in Josh Bennefield, spoiling the Panther shut-out.
BSC took its revenge for the run in the top of the seventh. The Panthers unloaded for eight runs on five hits and had bases loaded with no outs when the game was called due to the inclement weather. #Clay Malcolm# gave up six hits and struck out eight in six innings of work on the day. He improved to 3-0 on the season. The quick finish will allow the Panthers to get back on the road quickly to prepare for this weekend’s series with the same Huntingdon Hawks and the Wabash College Little Giants. BSC will host Wabash at 11:00 a.m. before playing the Hawks at 6:00 p.m. The Hawks and Little Giants will play the middle game of the three-game set at 2:30 p.m.
