Panthers take two from Sewanee to open SCAC
Game 1 | Game 2
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The BSC Panthers climbed to 13-3 today off two wins over The University of the South-Sewanee to open SCAC play. The Panthers scored a combined 27 runs in the two games to offensively bury the Tigers.
In game one the Panthers spread the scoring out plating multiple runs in the first, fourth, and sixth innings to 10-run Sewanee 13-3. #Darby Weppner# led the way offensively for the Panthers with five RBI's in the game. #Drew Leachman# added four of his own accounting for nine of BSC's 13 in the game. Weppner got his second home run of the season, a three-run blast off the right field net, in the sixth.
The Panthers' #Clay Malcolm# earned his fifth win of the season to remain perfect in his six appearances. The sophomore southpaw went four and a third innings allowing five hits, two Tiger runs, and punched out four.
Game two was closer over the first five innings, but BSC's powerful offense woke up in the sixth for nine runs to put the second game of the night out of reach. Sewanee held a two-run lead over the Panthers into the bottom of the fifth. A walk to #Josh Whitaker# followed by a #JD Hulse# triple and a sacrifice by Leachman allowed BSC to tie the game at two before the big sixth which saw the Panthers more than bat around the order.
#Blake Walley# ended the game in dramatic fashion with a three run walk-off homer high over the left field fence in the bottom of the eighth. That blast allowed the junior to come away with the RBI lead for the game at five on just two hits.
#Richard Vance# collected his second win of the season in two and two thirds innings, giving up just one hit to Tiger batters, no runs, and two strikeouts.
The Panthers will attempt to complete the series sweep of the Tigers tomorrow afternoon, weather permitting, at Striplin Field. Game time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
