Panthers complete rain-soaked sweep of Sewanee, 4-3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern (14-3, 3-0 SCAC) completed the series sweep today, defeating the Sewanee Tigers 4-3. The game was delayed a full hour and was played through wet cold conditions throughout, but the Panthers prevailed to open conference play 3-0.
The Panthers jumped out to another early lead, scoring three runs in the third. The inning started with two quick outs and #JD Hulse# was ready to make it a three-up-three-down inning for BSC when the ball got away from the Tiger catcher. Hulse reached on the wild pitch and the inning continued, allowing all three runs to score before the "fourth" out.
#Jacob Plagens# drove in the fourth Panther run in the next inning with a sacrifice fly to left, sending in #Blake Walley# who had doubled previously. But the Tigers were not going to go down without a fight. Sewanee picked up two fifth and another in the top of the ninth to answer the Panther offense.
The Tigers almost completed the comeback in that top of the ninth. #Clay Jones#, who collected his first win of the season with the Panther "W", got the first out of the inning, no problem, off a line out to #Josh Whitaker# in right. But the Tigers stepped up and two hits, one error and a walk later Sewanee had pulled within one with the bases loaded and only one out.
Coach Weisberg sent #Alex Goodsell# in to try and salvage the sweep for the Panthers. The lefty got the first batter swinging and the second looking with two clutch strikeouts to end the game and secure his first save of the year.
The Panthers will return in non-conference action on Sunday as they host Wisconsin-Platteville in the first game of a three-day, three-game series. First pitch is slated for 2:00 p.m. from Striplin Field.
