Panthers' 9th inning comeback thwarted, 6-3
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The BSC (14-4) Panthers trailed 6-2 going into the ninth inning today in the first of a three-game series with the University of Wisconsin-Platteville (2-1) Pioneers and were unable to bring in the necessary runs, stranding three to end the game 6-3.
The Panther offense could never find a rhythm today as Pioneer starter Joe Lange went the complete game giving up just 8 hits and three runs. #Brian Higginbotham# drove in the first Panther run in the bottom of the fourth, platting #Drew Leachman#. That tied the game at one, but over the next three innings the Pioneers rattled off five unanswered runs to take control of the game.
The Panthers scored two runs in the closing innings, but the comeback was too little, too late. The Pioneers worked through three Panther pitchers on the day. Starter #Jesse Meier# went five-and-a-third and took the loss, giving up five runs with five strikeouts. #Alex Goodsell# came in in the sixth and went three-and-a-third surrendering another run on four hits. #Brooks Webb# came in in the top of the ninth with two outs to close the book on the Pioneers after giving up two hits.
BSC will look to get back on the smiling side of the scoreboard tomorrow in the second game of the three game set with Platteville. First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m. from Striplin Field.
