Panthers come up short, 9-4, to Oglethorpe
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern (17-5, 4-1 SCAC) dropped the second game of the three-game series with Oglethorpe University (13-7, 1-1) today at Striplin Field, 9-4.
The Panthers jumped on the board early, thanks to a two-run blast over the left field fence by #Brian Higginbotham#. Unfortunately for the Panthers they were only able to muster two more runs in the fifth and came up five short against the visiting Petrels.
The game came unglued in top of the fourth. A pair of errors allowed the Petrels to score three in the top half of the inning on two hits. The Panthers had #Darby Weppner# at first after he reached on a fielder's choice and then #JD Hulse# was called out at the plate on a batter's interference as Weppner tried to steal second. The call by the home plate umpire sent coach Weisberg out of the dugout for a conversation which ended with Hulse still out and coach Weisberg in the showers.
From that point on, the Panthers gave up five more runs in route to their first home loss in two weeks. They will not have to wait long, however, to get back on the right track. The Petrels are in town tomorrow for one more in the rubber-match of the three-game series. First pitch is slated for 1:00 p.m. from Striplin Field.
