Panthers take game three 9-5 over Petrels
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Panthers closed out the series with Oglethorpe with a 9-5 win over the Petrels to take their second conference series of the season today at Striplin Field. With the win, 'Southern improves to 17-5 on the season and 5-1 in the SCAC-East, while OU drops to 13-8, 1-2.
'Southern got on the board early again today with two runs in the first. #Brandon Ricco# singled up the middle to start things off at the lead-off spot and was driven in five batters later by #Darby Weppner# to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead. #Alex Head# drove in the second Panther run with a single of his own to drive in #Drew Leachman#.
The Panthers continued to score runs in the third, insuring that they would not trail in the pivotal game three rubber match. #Sam Hill#, #Brain Higginbotham#, and Head and Weppner all scored in the inning to score all the runs BSC would need to take the series.
Oglethorpe did not go down without a fight, scoring four runs of their own in the fifth and one more in the seventh, but they were never able to overcome the deficit. The Panthers tacked on three more in the bottom half of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Darby Weppner shot a double over the center fielder's head to clear the loaded bases and seal the win for the Panthers.
#Drew Crofton# got his fourth win of the season, remaining perfect in his decisions so far, pitching four-and-two-thirds allowing nine hits and four Petrel runs. #Patrick Martin# and #Clay Jones# helped close the door on Oglethorpe allowing just four hits between them the rest of the way.
The Panthers will be on the road this week, traveling to Demorest, Ga. to take on Piedmont College in a single game on Tuesday before heading up to Greencastle, Ind. to play DePauw in a three-game weekender. They return to Striplin Field the following Tuesday to host Piedmont at 4:00 p.m.
