Panthers defeat DePauw, 6-2, 11-10, to win conference series

GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Birmingham-Southern baseball team moved to 20-6 on the season today with two wins against DePauw University, winning by the scores of 6-2 and 11-10 in Greencastle, Ind.
In game one, DePauw went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning, but the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the sixth courtesy of an RBI double from #Drew Leachman#, a sacrifice fly-out from #Sam Hill#, and an RBI single by #Bryan Higginbotham#.
DePauw put up another run in the bottom of the seventh, but BSC responded again with three runs in the top of the ninth, scoring on an error and a two-RBI single from #Brandon Ricco#. DePauw was unable to score in the bottom of the ninth, and the Panthers took the 6-2 win.
Leachman was 3-4 at the plate, while Ricco was 2-5 with two RBI.
#Drew Crofton# started on the mound and picked up the win, moving to 5-0 on the season, after allowing two hits and no earned runs with eight strikeouts in six innings. #Richard Vance# and #Clay Jones# came in for 1.1 and 0.2 innings, respectively, and gave up a combined three hits with three strikeouts.
In the nightcap, BSC put three on the board in the top of the first on a sacrifice fly-out by Higginbotham and a two-run homer by #Darby Weppner#. The Tigers scored one run in the bottom of the first, and then tied things up in the bottom of the fourth.
DePauw took a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth, and the Panthers cut it to 5-4 in the top of the eight on a sacrifice fly-out from #Alex Head#.
The Panthers exploded for seven runs in the top of the ninth, courtesy of an RBI single from Ricco to tie things up, a two-run single by Hill to put BSC up 7-5, a three-run home run from Higginbotham to increase the lead to 10-5, and an RBI single by #Patrick Kimmons# to put the Panthers up 11-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth. The Tigers were able to score five runs, cutting the lead to 11-10 to give BSC the one-run victory.
Hill, Weppner, and Head were all 2-4 at the plate, and Ricco and #Jon Walker# were both 2-5. Higginbotham led with four RBI.
Jones was the winning pitcher for BSC, coming in for the seventh inning and throwing two innings to move to 2-1 on the season. #Brian Fisher# threw the final inning to pick up the save, his second of the year. #Michael McCalib# was the starter for BSC and went four innings, and #Alex Goodsell# also thre two innings in the win.
BSC returns home this Tuesday, April 7, taking on Piedmont College at 4 p.m. at Striplin Field.
