Baseball wins 6-1 over Piedmont
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The BSC Panthers took the 6-1 victory from the visiting Piedmont College Lions this evening at Striplin Field. The win improves the Panthers to 21-6 on the season while the Lions fall to 15-14.
Both teams did their business early in this one. Neither team scored a run past the fourth inning, but the Panthers used a two-run first and a three-run third to put the Lions away for their 21st win on the season. With the win, the Panthers have passed their win total from last season with eleven games still to play.
#Brandon Ricco# led off the game for the Panthers with a base hit up the middle. He scored two batters later thanks to a sacrifice from #Sam Hill#. #Drew Leachman# scored the second Panther run on a single to center from #Darby Weppner#.
Ricco scored the first run in the third inning as well after a lead-off single to center. #Alex Head# drove in both him and Leachman, who reached on a single to center, with a double down the left field line. The Lions walked #Hardy Reynolds# which placed him on the paths for #Alex Head# to drive in a pair with a double, this time down the right field line.
The Panther shut-out was spoiled in the top of the fourth when Justin Vorherr doubled to center, scoring Jared Vermilya. BSC would get that run back in the bottom half thanks to a sacrifice fly from Leachman to center field which allowed #Blake Walley# to score from third.
The Panthers scored six runs on eleven hits on the day. The Panthers committed just one error in the field. The Lions, for their part, scored one run on four hits with two errors on the day.
The Panther pitching staff did this one by committee with five Panthers seeing innings in the nine. #Jordan Burchett# got his first start and his first win going the first two innings. The freshman gave up just one hit and three walks, striking out two in nine batters faced. #Frank Mullens#, #David Chabucos#, and #Patrick Martin# each threw two innings and #Alex Goodsell# came on to close in the ninth.
The Panthers will return home to Striplin Field for the final home series of the year this week. They will host SCAC-rival Rhodes College in a three game set starting Thursday. Game one is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start time at Striplin Field.
