Baseball takes series opener, 6-1 from Rhodes
Box Score
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern Panthers took game one of a three-game SCAC series with Rhodes College 6-1 tonight at Striplin Field. The win improves the Panthers to 22-6 overall and 8-2 in conference play. The Lynx fall to 21-13, 5-5 on the season.
The Panthers got on the board first in the bottom of the second. #Sam Hill# led off the inning with a single up the right side and #Brian HIgginbotham# followed that with a walk allowing #Patrick Kimmons# to drive in both runs on a single through the left side.
BSC struck again in the fourth to go up 3-1. Hill led the inning with a walk to get in position for #Alex Head# to drive in the run with a sacrifice fly to right. The Lynx broke up the shut-out for #Clay Malcolm# in the top of the sixth, but the run would be Rhodes' only offensive production in the game.
The Panthers salted the win in the seventh with a pair of triples, giving BSC three more runs to add to the tally. #Brandon Ricco# drove in #Jon Walker# with a three-bagger down the right field line to put the Panthers up 4-1. #J.D. Hulse# walked to get on for Sam Hill, who got the Panthers to the final margin with a triple of his own again down the right field line.
The Panthers got the win despite being outhit by the Lynx 11-7 on the day. They also committed two errors to Rhodes' one, but the Panthers were successful when it counted and took the series-opener in their final homestand of the season.
#Clay Malcolm# got his seventh win of the season, maintaining his unblemished 7-0 record on the year. Andy Holt took the loss for the Lynx, due mainly to lack of run support.
The series continues tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. from Striplin Field before wrapping up on Senior Day, Saturday the 11th at 2:00 p.m.
