Panthers take game three, 5-1, from Lynx

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Birmingham-Southern Panthers defeated the visiting Rhodes Lynx 5-1 on Senior Day at Striplin Field.  The win moves the Panthers to 23-7 overall and 9-3 in conference with just three conference games remaining on the schedule.

The Panthers got on the board in the first with two runs and never looked back.  #Michael McCalib# went seven innings for BSC allowing just five Lynx hits, striking out eight of 26 batters faced.  The win was McCalib's third on the year.

The Lynx walked #Brandon Ricco# to start the game and he got home four batters later thanks to a deep sacrifice to center from #Sam Hill#.  #Darby Weppner#'s single on the next at-bat proved to be the game winner, driving in #JD Hulse# for the second Panther run.

Rhodes broke the shut-out in the third thanks to a lead-off homer from Matt Gilbert, but the solo shot would be the only Lynx offense of the day.

The Panthers posted three more runs before closing out their home schedule, including a two-run blast in the seventh by Sam Hill.

BSC will close out the 2009 schedule on the road for the next three weeks.  The Panthers open the closing road trip in Montgomery next Wednesday, April 14th as they take on in-state rival Huntingdon College at 6:00 p.m.

The Panthers honored seniors #Patrick Kimmons# and manager John Amos Boutwell before the game.  Over the past two seasons, Kimmons provided a re-founded BSC baseball team with veteran leadership on and off the field.  The Tennessee Tech transfer will graduate this May with a Pre-Engineering degree en route to his post-graduate work at Auburn.  Boutwell has served has a student manager for the Panther baseball, softball, and football programs, giving tirelessly to BSC Athletics all while maintaining the highest of standards in the classroom.  John Amos will graduate this May with a degree in Accounting and a G.P.A. above 3.66

Both these men will be sorely missed on the Hilltop, and we wish them both well in all their future
endeavors.
