MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern Panthers traveled to Montgomery today to take on in-state rival Huntingdon College for a single game. The Panthers got runs when they needed them to put the Hawks away, 4-3. The win improves the Panthers to 24-7 on the season.
The Panthers got on the board first in the second when #Brandon Ricco# drove in #Blake Walley# with a strong hit to third which resulted in a fielder's choice but scored the run. The Hawks responded with a home run in the third to even the score at a run apiece.
Ricco got a triple on his next trip to the plate in the fifth which set him up to be brought home by #J.D. Hulse# with a grounder to the short stop. Small-ball got the job done again in the Panther seventh when BSC's offense posted two more runs to put the game out of reach of the home team.
#Josh Whitaker# led off the inning with a single to second. #Alex Head# connected with the sacrifice bunt to get Whitaker to second, and Brandon Ricco drove in his second run of the day with a double to left center. Ricco advanced to third with some heads-up base running, in a failed pick-off attempt by the Hawks and J.D. Hulse drove in his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to center.
The Hawks scored two more runs, including their second homerun in the bottom of the ninth to pull within one, but were unable to catch up to the Panthers before they ran out of at-bats.
BSC will travel to Danville, Kentucky this weekend for their SCAC finale with Centre College. A win by the Panthers or a loss by DePauw will lock up the Panther's first SCAC East Division Championship. They currently sit two games ahead of the Tigers with three games left to play.
