Panthers fall 8-5 at Centre
DANVILLE, Ky. - The BSC Panthers hopes of wrapping up their first SCAC-East Division championship were put on hold this afternoon by the Centre Colonels, who defeated the Panthers 8-5 in the first game of the three-game series. The loss drops the Panthers to 24-8 overall and 9-4 in conference.
The Panthers trailed early and never caught up to the hot-hitting Colonels. Centre jumped out 4-0 before the Panthers could get anything going in the top of the third. Drew Leachman got BSC on the boards with a single down the right field line to plate Brandon Ricco, and Sam Hill got a sac fly to left to bring in J.D. Hulse to pull the game to 4-2.
But, the Colonels, with 16 hits on the day, didn't let up, scoring a run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. Two late RBI's from Darby Weppner kept the Panthers in the game in the late innings, but the last-minute comeback was not in the cards for the Panthers tonight, falling ultimately by the 8-5 margin.
Clay Malcolm took his second loss of the season, going just three-and-two-thirds innings allowing six runs on ten hits a walk and three strikeouts in the outing.
The Panthers will have two opportunities tomorrow to close out the regular season at the top of the East Division standings. A Panther win over Centre in game two would give them the lead outright, while a DePauw loss would at least guarantee a tie for first. The Panthers start at 12:00 p.m. Central (1:00 p.m. local) with the Colonels while DePauw hosts Oglethorpe in Greencastle, Ind., also at noon Central.
