BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team opens its 2009 schedule this weekend with a pair of single-games with the Maryville College Scots. First pitch on Saturday is slated for 4:00 p.m. from Striplin Field.
The Panthers are looking to build on last season’s fresh start in Division III. Coach Weisberg returns all his starters from a year ago and has added 13 new faces to the Panther lineup. Last season’s BSC squad posted a 20-20 record with a freshman heavy team and this year’s team was picked to finish third in the SCAC Eastern Division in the coaches’ preseason poll.
The Panthers went 2-1 last season with the Scots. They split a series in Maryville last February, falling in game one 8-9 before getting the second 4-2. The Panthers then took a single game last April on the Hilltop, 6-2.
This weekend’s games will be the only meetings between the two squads this season. The final 2009 match-up for the two teams will be on Sunday at 1 p.m.
The two games will be the first of 28 scheduled home games this season for the Panthers.
