Baseball wins 7-2 over Mount St. Joe – second game with Arcadia to follow
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Panthers jumped on the Lions early today, defeating Mount St. Joseph 7-2 in the first of two games today at Striplin Field.
BSC (5-1) scored two runs in each of the first two innings, jumping out to a 4-0 lead to start things off. A leadoff walk to #J.D. Hulse# and subsequent stolen base set up the first run with a #Drew Leachman# single. #Brandon Ricco# doubled to right two batters later to drive in Leachman.
The bottom of the second started slower, but the result was the same with two Panther runs on the board. Leachman drove in his second and third runs with a single to center that plated #Jacob Plagens# and #Zac Stansell#.
The third and fourth innings were quiet, the score set at 4-0. The Lions (0-1) brought in a middle reliever to take over for Ben Hunterman to try to prevent the Panther lead from swelling any further. It didn’t work. BSC tacked on two more in the frame thanks to a Stansell double.
Mount St. Joseph broke the shutout in the seventh, scoring two and closing the book on #Clay Malcom#’s day. The sophomore gave up the pair, including a 370 foot homerun over the left field wall, but hung in long enough for his first win of the season. #Jordan Burchett# came in and threw two-and-a-third scoreless innings to finish out the side.
The Panthers will face off with Arcadia University starting at approximately 4:15.
