BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern baseball team defeated in-state rival Huntingdon College in seven innings 12-2.
BSC (7-1) gave up two runs in the top of the first, but held the Hawks (8-4) scoreless the rest of the way, winning by the 10-run rule.
The Panthers scored in every inning but the first, including three home runs by three different Panthers. #Brian Higginbotham# capped a four-run third inning with a two-run shot. #Sam Hill# bagged one of his own in the fourth for another two runs, and #Bruce Maxwell# scored BSC’s final two in the home half of the sixth to put ‘Southern up ten, 12-2 going into the seventh.
Both Hill and Maxwell drove in three runs on the day. The Panthers scored 12 runs on 11 hits and committed no errors, while the Hawks had their two runs on six hits, also with no errors.
#Clay Jones# came in to close the game in the seventh, getting Huntingdon to go three-up three-down in order to seal the Panthers’ seventh in a row.
#John Naramore# got the win in his start for the Panthers. The senior logged five innings of work, allowing six hits, two runs scored, two walks, and six strikeouts. Doug Pate collected the loss for Huntingdon, giving up five of the Panthers’ 12 in two innings.
The Panthers will return to Striplin Field next weekend as they host Wabash and Adrian Colleges for a weekend round-robin. Game one of a Saturday double-header begins at 2:00 p.m. with Wabash.
