BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The BSC baseball team continued to roll on Sunday, taking a third game from Wabash College 15-0 before defeating #11 Adrian College 9-5 in the second game of today’s split double header.
The Panthers (11-1) made quick work of Wabash, scoring in all but two innings in the 15-0 shutout. BSC posted four triples in the game, including two in the sixth inning alone. #J.D. Hulse# accounted for two of the four, one in the second and another in the sixth. #Brandon Ricco# had the other three-bagger in the sixth, and #Bruce Maxwell# hit the fourth in the eighth. Maxwell capped the Panthers offense in the ninth with a three run homerun, his fifth of the season.
#Jordan Burchett# went five innings in the start for the Panthers for his first win of the season. Wabash leaves Birmingham winless at 0-4.
In game two the Panthers took on #11 ranked Adrian College. The Bulldogs (1-1) came in fresh off a 14-4 win over Wabash this morning.
BSC wasted no time getting things going. A single and two walks from the first five Panthers loaded the bases for #Brian Higginbotham# in the bottom of the first. The junior from Marietta, Ga. Blasted the ball deep over the right field wall for the Panthers’ first grand slam of the season to jump out 4-0.
Bruce Maxwell provided extra lift in the second with a two-run double that plated #Drew Leachman# and #J.D. Hulse#, giving the Panthers a 6-0 lead before the Bulldogs could respond.
Adrian scored two in the top of the fourth after both teams went scoreless in the third. A two-run double of their own pulled the score to 6-2, but the Panthers answered in the bottom half when Sam Hill scored on a throwing error by the Bulldogs’ second basemen, Panthers 7-2.
The Bulldogs posted three in the top of the fifth on four hits and left one stranded to pull to 7-5, but they would not get closer than that again. ‘Southern scored one in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the eighth to take the 9-5 win.
#Clay Malcolm# earns his second win of the season, moving to 2-1, while #Clay Jones# collected the save in three-and-two-thirds innings.
The win pushes the current win-streak to 11. The Panthers will host the Bulldogs for the second and final game of their series tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Striplin Field.
