BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham-Southern Panthers gave up all nine LaGrange runs in the seventh and eighth innings, dropping their first home game of the season 9-6.
BSC jumped all over the visiting Panthers early, as #Jordan Burchette# pitched a no-hitter through six as the ‘Southern offense pinned up five runs to take the 5-0 advantage into the late innings.
LaGrange (9-9) scored five runs on Burchette in the top of the seventh to tie the game. #Drew Crofton# came in mid-way through the inning but, with the bases already loaded by the BSC starter, could not prevent LC from scoring the tying run before getting a grounder to end the inning.
‘Southern did retake the lead momentarily in the bottom half of the seventh thanks to a single from #John Walker# that plated #Brandon Ricco#, but four more LaGrange runs in the eighth put the game out of reach, as the Panthers went quietly and quickly in their final two at-bats.
#Alex Goodsell# took the loss for BSC in two-thirds of an inning, surrendering the four LaGrange runs in the top of the eighth.
The Panthers will return to Striplin Field this weekend for the opening of their SCAC schedule as they host DePauw University. Game one of Saturday’s double header starts at 3:00 p.m.
