BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham-Southern Panthers defeated the visiting Centre College Colonels 7-1 today in the first game of the three-game series.
The Panthers (22-4, 6-1 SCAC) never trailed, scoring seven runs on ten hits while holding the Colonels (8-13, 3-4 SCAC) to just one run on seven hits.
#J.D. Hulse# led off the Panther half of the first with a single and was driven in three batters later by #Brandon Ricco# for the first run of the game. The Colonels posted their sole run in the second thanks to a few defensive miscues and stolen bases that tied the game at one.
'Southern was able to retake the lead in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a lead-off walk and subsequent errors by the Colonels to go up 2-1. They then tacked on runs in the third, fourth and seventh innings to win game one of the series.
#Brian Higginbotham# notched his sixth homerun in the seventh with a solo shot over the wall in left center.
#Clay Malcom# got his fourth win of the season in the start, going seven full innings giving up the Colonels' run on six hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
BSC will return to Striplin Field tomorrow afternoon to close out the current homestand with a double-header with the Colonels. First pitch is slated for noon.
