'Southern baseball sweeps Colonels

Game 1 | Game 2

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -
The Birmingham-Southern baseball team hit five home runs in today's two games to complete the sweep of the Centre College Colonels 11-1 and 7-5.

The Colonels (8-15, 3-6 SCAC) scored first in both games, with single runs in the top of each first inning, but the Panthers (24-4, 8-1 SCAC) were able to get those back, and then some, with big offensive production from two Panthers in particular.

In game one, the Panthers managed to take control in the second inning with six unearned runs coming after a Colonel miscue defensively.  #Drew Leachman# had his first big hit of the day, driving in three of those six with a triple to right center.

The first long ball came in the Panthers' third when #Bruce Maxwell# crushed one to left center to lead off the inning.  Two batters later #Josh Whitaker# took his best swing of the day and drove the ball deep over the left filed wall again, putting BSC up 8-1.  Leachman then launched one in the fourth for his first of the day over the center fielders' head by the flag pole, 9-1 Panthers.

The Colonels gave up two more in the fifth to close game one at 11-1 BSC.  #John Naramore# got his sixth win of the season in the start for 'Southern, going five innings allowing the one Colonels' run in the first on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

After spotting the Colonels another single run in the top of the first in game two, the Panthers answered in their half with back-to-back lead-off triples from #J.D. Hulse# and again from #Drew Leachman#.  He would cross the plate on the next at-bat from #Sam Hill# to put BSC up 2-1 at the end of the first.

Both teams posted a one-run fourth, but the Colonels got two in the fifth and another in the top of the seventh to go up 5-3 before the stretch.  Drew Leachman answered again in the home half of the seventh with a two-run shot, again to center that plated Hulse and tied the score at five.

#Bruce Maxwell# followed that performance with a two run blast of his own in the eighth to retake the lead for BSC, 7-5.  It was the freshman's sixth homerun in as many games, and his 12th of the season.

#Alex Goodsell# earned the win in relief for the Panthers for his first win of the season.  He threw the closing two innings, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts in his nine Colonels faced.

The Panthers will take to the road next weekend for a three-game series with the Lynx of Rhodes College up in Memphis.  Game time for the series opener on Saturday is slated for 1:00 p.m.
